Jelly Cubes
Raw jelly cubes - the concentrated blocks you dissolve to make jelly - are a specific choking hazard named in official guidance. They are firm, slippery and just the right size to lodge in a small airway, and they swell as they absorb moisture.
How to serve at this age
0-4 years: Never give raw jelly cubes. Made-up jelly, fully dissolved and set, is not a choking hazard in the same way, but it is still mostly sugar - keep it occasional. Children under 2 should have no added sugar.
Nutrition
Sugar and gelatine, with no meaningful nutritional value.
A note from the editors
Keep the packet out of reach while you are cooking. Most incidents happen when a child picks a cube off the counter, not when they are served one.
Good to know
Raw jelly cubes are a choking hazard for babies and young children and should never be given or left within reach. Set jelly is safer but is still added sugar.
