Food guide

Applesauce

Applesauce is a wonderful first food, suitable from 6 months, thanks to its naturally sweet taste and smooth, easy-to-swallow texture. It's a comforting and familiar flavor that makes for a gentle introduction to solids.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Offer smooth, plain unsweetened applesauce on a pre-loaded spoon for baby to explore, or let them scoop it with their hands. 9-12 months: Introduce slightly chunkier applesauce or swirl it into yogurt and oatmeal for added flavor and nutrients. 12+ months: Serve as a healthy side dish, mix into baked goods, or offer as a dip for soft fruit pieces.

Nutrition

Applesauce provides beneficial dietary fiber, which is excellent for promoting healthy digestion and preventing constipation, especially important as babies adjust to solids. It also contains Vitamin C, an essential nutrient that helps support a strong immune system.

A note from the editors

Choose unsweetened applesauce, whether store-bought or homemade, to avoid unnecessary added sugars for your little one. Store homemade applesauce in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for longer.

Good to know

Applesauce is generally safe and not a common allergen. Always ensure it's smooth and free of large chunks to prevent any choking hazards, even though its texture is usually very safe.
