Feeding your 12-month-old: what changes at one year
Your baby's first birthday brings three real changes: whole cow's milk can become the main drink, bottles start to phase out, and most family food is now fair game. None of it has to happen overnight.
- Meals a day
- 3, plus 2 snacks
- Milk
- 300–400 ml whole cow's milk, or breastfeeds
- Drinks
- Milk and water from a cup
- Texture
- Soft family food
Switching to cow's milk
From 12 months, whole (full-fat) cow's milk can replace formula as the main drink, around 300–400 ml a day. Semi-skimmed isn't suitable as a main drink until age two. If you're breastfeeding, there's no need to add cow's milk as a drink; carry on as long as it works for you both.
Phasing out the bottle
Many families start the move from bottle to cup at 12 months, and the AAP recommends finishing by 18 months. Offer cow's milk in a cup from the start so the bottle habit isn't rebuilt with the new drink. The bedtime bottle is usually the last to go: swap it for a cup and a cuddle.
What's newly allowed
Honey is safe from 12 months (before that it carries a risk of infant botulism), and whole milk can be used freely in cooking. Whole nuts are still a choking risk for young children, so keep offering nuts ground or as smooth nut butter. Keep salt low: add it to adult plates at the table.
Family food, family table
Your toddler can now eat most of what you eat, cut into manageable pieces. Keep offering variety and allergens regularly, and eat together as often as you can. The months of varied eating behind you are the best foundation for the toddler years.

Common questions
How much cow's milk should a 1-year-old drink?+
Around 300–400 ml of whole cow's milk a day is enough. Much more than that can fill toddlers up and crowd out iron-rich food.
Can my 1-year-old have honey?+
Yes. Honey is safe from 12 months. Before that it should be avoided completely because of the risk of infant botulism.
