Feeding your 9-month-old: three meals a day
Nine months is a turning point. Most babies are now on three meals a day, eating a much wider range of food, and managing soft lumps and small pieces. The plate starts to look a lot like a smaller, salt-free version of yours.

Three meals a day
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is the typical goal by nine months. Portions are still modest, and milk still provides a big share of calories. If your baby isn't on three meals yet, there's no rush. Build up as their interest grows.
A balanced plate
Across the day, include protein (meat, fish, eggs, lentils, beans, yogurt), carbohydrates (pasta, rice, potato, oats, bread) and healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, oily fish, full-fat dairy). Always choose full-fat dairy: babies need the energy and the fat-soluble vitamins. Aim for variety across the week rather than perfection at every meal.
Texture: keep moving
By nine months, most food should be mashed, minced or in soft pieces, not smooth. Babies offered lumpy food later than this are more likely to be fussy eaters at school age. If your baby still struggles with lumps after several weeks of patient offering, a health visitor or feeding specialist can help.
Eat together
Babies learn by watching. Sitting at the table and eating with your baby, even just a snack for you, makes them more willing to try new foods. Cook family meals without salt, take out your baby's portion, then season the adult plates.

Common questions
How much should a 9-month-old eat?+
Three small meals a day, guided by appetite. There's no set amount: let your baby decide how much, and expect some days to be big and others small.
Can my 9-month-old eat what we eat?+
Mostly, yes. Cook without salt, stock cubes or added sugar, take your baby's portion out before seasoning, and make sure textures are soft enough to squash between your fingers.
