Arrowroot

Arrowroot is a starchy powder derived from the root of a tropical plant and can be introduced at 6 months. It is most commonly used as a gentle, easily digestible thickener for baby porridges and purees.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Whisk a small amount into fruit purées or vegetable soups to thicken the texture. 9-12 months: Use to thicken stews or create soft, baby-friendly biscuits. 12+ months: Use in baking or as a thickening agent for sauces in family meals.

Nutrition

Arrowroot is primarily a source of carbohydrates, providing quick energy for an active baby. While it is low in vitamins and minerals compared to whole grains, it is exceptionally gentle on the stomach and helpful for babies with sensitive digestion. It is naturally gluten-free and hypoallergenic.

A note from the editors

Arrowroot thickens very quickly when heated; start with a small amount mixed into cold liquid before adding it to a hot pan to prevent clumps.

Good to know

Because arrowroot is a pure starch, it should be used in moderation as a thickener rather than a primary meal component. Ensure it is fully cooked into liquid to prevent gummy textures that could pose a choking risk if not properly thinned.
