Asian Sea Bass

Asian sea bass (barramundi) is a popular fish in Hong Kong and Southeast Asian cuisine, suitable for babies from around 6 months. It has a clean, mild flavor and firm yet tender flesh that is well-suited for baby food.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Steam a fillet until fully cooked, remove all bones carefully, then flake and puree or mash into congee or rice porridge. 9-12 months: Offer small, soft flakes of steamed fish mixed with vegetables or stirred into noodle soup. 12+ months: Serve soft pieces of steamed or lightly pan-fried fish as finger food. Can also be baked with mild seasonings.

Nutrition

Excellent source of high-quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Rich in vitamin D, selenium, and potassium. The protein and healthy fats support brain development and overall growth in babies.

A note from the editors

Steaming is the preferred cooking method for babies as it keeps the flesh moist and tender. A classic Hong Kong preparation is to steam with a few slices of ginger and scallion to reduce any fishy taste.

Good to know

Fish is a common allergen. Introduce Asian sea bass carefully and monitor for allergic reactions. Like grass carp, bones must be removed thoroughly before serving. Asian sea bass has larger, easier-to-spot bones compared to carp, making preparation slightly simpler.
