Baby Chinese Cabbage
Baby Chinese cabbage (baby bok choy or baby choy sum) is a small, tender variety of Chinese greens suitable for babies from around 6 months. Its compact size and delicate flavor make it a convenient choice for preparing baby meals.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam or boil the leaves until very soft, then puree or mash. Mix into rice porridge or combine with pureed fish for a balanced meal. 9-12 months: Chop the cooked leaves finely and add to congee, soups, or noodle dishes. 12+ months: Serve lightly cooked halves or quarters that toddlers can pick up and eat.
Nutrition
Provides vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, and potassium. Like other dark leafy greens, it also contains iron and folate. The calcium content is particularly notable for supporting growing bones.
A note from the editors
Wash thoroughly between the leaves where dirt can collect. For the youngest babies, separate the leaves from the stems and use only the leafy parts, which are softer and easier to puree.
Good to know
Baby Chinese cabbage is not a common allergen. Its smaller leaves are more tender than full-sized varieties, reducing preparation time. The mild, sweet flavor is well-received by most babies.
