Black Pepper

Black pepper can be introduced from 6 months of age in tiny amounts to broaden your baby's palate. It adds a subtle warmth and flavor to foods without significant nutritional contribution.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Introduce a tiny pinch of finely ground black pepper mixed into purees, porridges, or mashed vegetables. 9-12 months: A small sprinkle can be added to savory dishes, eggs, or stews to enhance flavor. 12+ months: Use light seasoning as desired in family meals, ensuring it's well incorporated and not overwhelming.

Nutrition

While not a significant source of nutrients in the amounts typically consumed by babies, black pepper is primarily used for flavor. In larger quantities for adults, it contains antioxidants and may aid digestion, but for babies, its role is culinary.

A note from the editors

Always start with a minuscule amount and mix it thoroughly into your baby's food to introduce the flavor gently.

Good to know

Avoid using large flakes of black pepper, which could be an oral irritant. Use finely ground pepper only and in very small quantities to prevent irritation. There is no significant allergen risk.
