Brazil Nut
Brazil nuts can be introduced around 6 months, but always in a safe, prepared form, never whole. They are a nutritional powerhouse, offering unique benefits and a mild, earthy flavor for your baby's palate.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Finely ground into a powder and mixed into oatmeal or yogurt. Alternatively, a thin smear of smooth, unsweetened Brazil nut butter on toast strips or fruit purees. 9-12 months: Continue with finely ground powder or smooth nut butter. Ensure nut butter is spread thinly to avoid sticky clumps. 12+ months: Finely ground Brazil nut powder or smooth nut butter. Never offer whole or chopped nuts due to high choking risk.
Nutrition
Brazil nuts are incredibly rich in selenium, a crucial trace mineral for thyroid function and immune health, often difficult to find in other foods. They also provide healthy fats for brain development, protein for growth, and fiber for digestive regularity.
A note from the editors
Toasting brazil nuts lightly before grinding can enhance their flavor and make them easier to process into a fine powder.
Good to know
Brazil nuts are a common allergen. Introduce them one at a time, watching closely for any allergic reactions like hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Always serve ground or as a smooth butter; never whole due to severe choking risk.
