Brown Rice
Brown rice is whole grain rice with only the outer hull removed, retaining the bran and germ layers. It can be introduced from around 6 months. It is a nutritious staple that provides more fiber and vitamins than white rice, making it a wholesome base for baby meals.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cook brown rice with extra water until very soft and mushy, then blend into a smooth puree or porridge. Mixing with breast milk or formula can improve the texture and taste. 9-12 months: Serve as soft congee, combined with pureed vegetables or fish. Can also mix with white rice for a milder texture. 12+ months: Serve soft-cooked brown rice as a side dish or base for meals. Toddlers can eat it with soups, stir-fries, or curries.
Nutrition
Rich in B vitamins (especially B1 and B6), magnesium, phosphorus, and manganese. Higher in fiber and protein than white rice. Also contains selenium and small amounts of iron. The additional nutrients compared to white rice support healthy growth.
A note from the editors
Soak brown rice for at least 2 hours (or overnight) before cooking to reduce cooking time and achieve a softer texture. Start by mixing brown rice with white rice in a 1:3 ratio, then gradually increase the brown rice proportion.
Good to know
Brown rice is not a common allergen. It has a firmer, chewier texture than white rice, so it needs to be cooked until very soft for babies. Some parents worry about arsenic in rice; rinsing thoroughly and cooking in excess water (then draining) can help reduce arsenic content.
