Cacao Powder

Unsweetened cacao powder can be introduced from 12 months of age, offering a rich, earthy flavor and some beneficial compounds. It's best used sparingly as a flavor enhancer, not a main ingredient.

How to serve at this age

12+ months: Add a tiny amount (e.g., ¼ teaspoon) of unsweetened cacao powder to smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, or baked goods. Ensure it's thoroughly mixed.

Nutrition

Cacao powder contains antioxidants, such as flavonoids, which contribute to overall health. It also provides small amounts of minerals like magnesium and iron, but it is not a primary source of these nutrients in the small quantities babies consume.

A note from the editors

Always use unsweetened cacao powder and avoid adding any extra sugar to your baby's foods.

Good to know

Ensure the cacao powder is unsweetened and used in small quantities. While it contains a small amount of caffeine, typical serving sizes for toddlers are generally not a concern. Monitor for any sensitivities.
