Cassava

Cassava is a starchy root vegetable that is a great source of energy for growing babies. It can be safely introduced once your baby shows readiness for solids around 6 months, provided it is cooked until very soft.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Offer long, thick wedges cooked until fork-tender for easy grabbing. 9-12 months: Serve in smaller, bite-sized chunks that are soft and easy to pick up. 12+ months: Serve cooked pieces as part of a mixed dish or with a dipping sauce.

Nutrition

This root vegetable is rich in carbohydrates, providing essential energy for your baby's active days. While it lacks significant protein or fat, it serves as a wonderful, calorie-dense base for nutrient-rich toppings. Ensure you pair it with healthy fats like avocado or nut butter to create a more balanced meal.

A note from the editors

Always peel and soak cassava before boiling to remove any bitterness and ensure it is safe and palatable for your little one.

Good to know

Cassava must always be peeled and cooked thoroughly, as raw cassava contains cyanogenic glycosides. Serve in large, finger-sized wedges to prevent choking, ensuring they are tender enough to be mashed between your fingers.
