Chinese Yam

Chinese yam (huai shan) is a traditional ingredient in Chinese soups and herbal cooking, suitable for babies from around 6 months. It is valued for its gentle effect on the digestive system and its ability to support appetite in young children.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Peel, slice, and steam or boil until completely soft. Mash or puree into a smooth paste. It blends well into congee or can be mixed with breast milk or formula. 9-12 months: Cut into small, soft cubes and add to soups or porridge. Can also be mashed and shaped into small patties. 12+ months: Serve soft-cooked slices or cubes as finger food. Add to soups with pork or chicken for a nourishing meal.

Nutrition

Contains complex carbohydrates for sustained energy, potassium, vitamin C, and B vitamins. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is considered beneficial for the spleen and stomach, supporting healthy digestion and nutrient absorption.

A note from the editors

Soak peeled Chinese yam in water with a splash of vinegar to prevent browning. It pairs well with dates and goji berries in traditional nourishing soups for babies.

Good to know

Chinese yam is not a common allergen, but the raw yam can cause skin irritation during preparation due to natural compounds in the skin. Always wear gloves when peeling and cook thoroughly before serving. Once cooked, it is perfectly safe and gentle for babies.
