Chives
Chives can be introduced from 6 months to add a mild, delicate oniony flavor to your baby's meals. They are a fantastic way to broaden their palate and introduce them to new aromatic experiences.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Very finely minced and stirred into purees, porridges, or soft scrambled eggs to impart a gentle flavor. 9-12 months: Finely snipped and mixed into softer textures like mashed avocado, yogurt, or soft pasta, ensuring no long pieces. 12+ months: Finely snipped and used as a garnish or mixed into a variety of dishes like omelets, soups, or mashed potatoes.
Nutrition
While not a primary source of macronutrients, chives offer small but beneficial amounts of Vitamin K, important for healthy blood clotting. They also provide Vitamin C for immune support and various antioxidants that contribute to overall well-being.
A note from the editors
Add finely minced chives at the very end of cooking or as a fresh garnish to preserve their delicate flavor and vibrant color.
Good to know
Chives are generally safe for babies, but their long, stringy nature can pose a choking risk if not prepared correctly. Always ensure they are very finely minced or snipped. Supervise your baby closely during mealtime.
