Food guide
Daikon
Daikon is a mild, winter radish that becomes incredibly sweet and tender when cooked, making it a great vegetable for babies aged 6 months and older. It is a wonderful way to introduce a slightly different flavor profile compared to typical root vegetables.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam or boil until fork-tender and mash or serve as soft, thin strips. 9-12 months: Offer well-cooked, bite-sized cubes that are soft enough to squish between your fingers. 12+ months: Include in soups or stews where it has been slow-cooked until meltingly soft.
Nutrition
Daikon is surprisingly rich in digestive enzymes like diastase which helps babies break down starches effectively. It is very low in calories but provides a good boost of vitamin C to support immune health. Its high water content also helps with overall hydration.
A note from the editors
Daikon absorbs the flavors of whatever it is cooked with, so simmer it in a mild vegetable or chicken broth for extra flavor.
Good to know
Daikon must be cooked until very soft to avoid any choking risk, as raw radish is far too hard for babies. Peel the skin thoroughly before cooking to ensure the texture is uniform and easy to chew.
