Elderberry

Elderberries can be introduced to your baby starting at 8 months, provided they are prepared correctly. Because raw elderberries contain compounds that can cause digestive upset, they must be fully cooked to ensure they are safe for your little one.

How to serve at this age

8-12 months: Simmered into a thick, seedless syrup or strained reduction served over porridge. 12-18 months: Mixed into mashed fruit or yogurt in small amounts. 18+ months: Incorporated into cooked baked goods or smoothies.

Nutrition

Elderberries are famous for their high concentration of vitamins A and C, which are vital for vision health and immune function. They contain potent antioxidants that help protect cells from damage. Including them in a balanced diet can provide a wonderful boost to your baby's nutrient intake.

A note from the editors

When purchasing elderberry products like syrups, ensure they are specifically formulated for babies and contain no added honey, which is unsafe for infants under one year.

Good to know

Never serve raw elderberries or leaves, as they can be toxic; always ensure they are boiled or simmered until completely broken down. They are not a common allergen, but as with any new fruit, introduce them in small quantities to monitor for sensitivities.
