Food guide
Enoki
Enoki mushrooms can be introduced from 6 months. Their mild flavor and unique texture, when properly prepared, make them an interesting addition to a baby's diet. They are a good way to expose babies to different forms of fungi.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cook thoroughly until very soft. Finely chop or purée and mix into other soft foods like purées or mashed vegetables. 9-12 months: Offer finely chopped cooked enoki mixed into soft dishes like risotto or pasta sauce. Ensure they are well-cooked and extremely soft. 12+ months: Serve well-cooked and finely chopped, perhaps incorporated into stir-fries or soups. Always ensure they are soft and easy to chew.
Nutrition
Enoki mushrooms provide B vitamins, which are important for energy metabolism and supporting a healthy nervous system. They also contain dietary fiber, aiding in healthy digestion and preventing constipation, along with beneficial antioxidants.
A note from the editors
Cook enoki mushrooms by steaming or sautéing until very tender, then finely chop them to easily integrate into baby's meals.
Good to know
Enoki mushrooms have been linked to listeria outbreaks, so they must never be served raw - cook them until piping hot and very soft all the way through. Mushrooms also have a chewy texture some babies find challenging. Not a common allergen, but watch for individual sensitivities.
