Flax Seeds

Ground flax seeds can be introduced around 6 months. They're an excellent plant source of omega-3 fatty acids.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Mix a small amount of ground flax into purees, oatmeal, or yogurt. 9-12 months: Add to smoothies, pancakes, or baked goods. 12-24 months: Sprinkle on cereals or mix into various dishes.

Nutrition

Rich in omega-3 fatty acids (ALA), fiber, and lignans. Good source of protein and various vitamins and minerals.

A note from the editors

Store ground flax seeds in the refrigerator or freezer as they can go rancid quickly. Grind whole seeds fresh for best nutrition.

Good to know

Always serve ground flax seeds - whole seeds pass through undigested. Start with small amounts (1/4 teaspoon).
