Food guide
Freekeh
Freekeh, a nutritious cracked wheat with a smoky flavor, can be introduced from 6 months. It's a fantastic grain to offer variety and boosts fiber in your baby's diet. Cooked until soft, it makes a wholesome alternative to rice or oats.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cook freekeh until very soft, then mash or blend into a smooth porridge. Can be mixed with fruit purées or vegetable mashes. 9-12 months: Serve well-cooked, soft freekeh as part of a meal, perhaps mixed with yogurt or as a side dish. Ensure it's soft enough for gumming. 12+ months: Offer cooked freekeh as a side dish, in salads, or mixed into stews. Continue to ensure it's fully cooked and tender.
Nutrition
High in dietary fiber, freekeh supports healthy digestion and can help prevent constipation in babies. It also offers a good source of plant-based protein for growth and essential minerals like iron and magnesium, vital for development.
A note from the editors
Cook freekeh with low-sodium vegetable broth instead of water for an extra boost of savory flavor and added nutrients.
Good to know
Freekeh is a form of wheat, which is a common allergen. Introduce it separately and observe for any allergic reactions. Always ensure it's cooked until very soft for easy digestion and safe consumption.
