Food guide
Gouda
Gouda cheese can be introduced from 6 months. Opt for pasteurized, full-fat gouda as a delicious source of calcium and healthy fats. Its mild flavor and firm-yet-creamy texture make it a palatable option for babies.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Offer small amounts of pasteurized Gouda, finely grated and sprinkled over other foods, or in very thin, small strips. 9-12 months: Serve small, thin strips or finely grated. Can be offered as a soft finger food, ensuring pieces are easily manageable. 12+ months: Serve small cubes or shredded cheese. Always ensure it's cut into safe, bite-sized pieces.
Nutrition
Gouda is an excellent source of calcium, vital for developing strong bones and teeth, and provides protein essential for growth. It also contains healthy fats that are important for brain development and supplying energy.
A note from the editors
Combine finely grated Gouda with steamed, mashed sweet potato or zucchini for a creamy, nutrient-rich dish that babies will love.
Good to know
Dairy is a common allergen. Introduce Gouda separately and watch for reactions. Gouda is moderate in sodium; serve sparingly and in tiny amounts for babies, as they need very little added salt. Avoid hard, crumbly, or stringy pieces which pose a choking risk.
