Grass Carp
Grass carp is one of the most commonly consumed freshwater fish in Chinese cuisine and can be introduced from around 6 months. It has mild-flavored, tender flesh that flakes easily, making it suitable for baby food when prepared carefully.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam a fillet thoroughly, then carefully remove all bones. Flake the flesh finely and mix into congee or puree with vegetables. 9-12 months: Serve small, well-checked flakes of steamed fish mixed into rice or noodle dishes. 12+ months: Offer soft pieces of steamed or gently pan-fried fish, always ensuring bones are completely removed.
Nutrition
Good source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and B vitamins. Also provides selenium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. The high-quality protein supports muscle and tissue development in growing babies.
A note from the editors
The belly section of grass carp tends to have fewer bones and softer flesh, making it the best cut for babies. Steaming with ginger and a splash of soy sauce is the classic Cantonese preparation.
Good to know
Fish is a common allergen. Introduce grass carp carefully and watch for any allergic reactions. Most importantly, grass carp has many small bones that must be removed meticulously before serving to babies. Always double-check for bones by pressing the flesh between your fingers.
