Hazelnut

Hazelnuts can be introduced from around 6 months, but only ever finely ground or as a smooth butter — never whole. They are rich in healthy fats, vitamin E and protein, and bring a sweet, toasty flavour to porridge and purees.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Finely ground into a powder and stirred into oatmeal, yogurt or fruit puree, or a thin smear of smooth hazelnut butter on soft toast strips. 9-12 months: Continue with finely ground hazelnuts or smooth hazelnut butter, spread thinly so it does not form sticky clumps. 12+ months: Ground hazelnuts in baked goods and porridge, or smooth hazelnut butter. Still never whole or chopped.

Nutrition

Contains healthy fats, vitamin E, and protein. Important for brain development.

A note from the editors

Toasting hazelnuts before grinding deepens their flavour. Rub off the papery skins in a clean tea towel first for a smoother texture.

Good to know

Hazelnut is a common allergen (tree nut). Introduce it on its own, in a small amount, and watch for signs of a reaction such as hives, swelling or difficulty breathing. Whole and chopped nuts stay a choking hazard until age 5, so keep serving them finely ground or as a smooth, thinned butter.
