Hummus

Hummus can be introduced around 6 months. It's a nutritious spread made from chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, and lemon.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Spread thinly on toast strips or mix into purees. 9-12 months: Use as a dip for soft vegetables. 12-24 months: Serve with various dipping foods.

Nutrition

Good source of plant protein and fiber. Contains iron, folate, and healthy fats from tahini and olive oil.

A note from the editors

Make your own for lower sodium. Extra-smooth hummus is easier for younger babies.

Good to know

Contains sesame (tahini), which is a common allergen. Start with small amounts. Homemade allows control of salt.
