Food guide
Lima Beans
Lima beans, also known as butter beans, have a creamy texture that is perfect for babies exploring new finger foods. They are a nutrient-dense powerhouse that helps keep baby full and satisfied.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Remove skins and mash thoroughly into a soft paste. 9-12 months: Serve cooked, skinned, and flattened to encourage pincer grasp. 12+ months: Serve cooked and skinned as a side dish or mixed into grain bowls.
Nutrition
Lima beans are a fantastic source of plant-based protein and iron, both of which are critical for healthy brain development and energy. They are also packed with fiber, which is excellent for digestive regularity. Their potassium content supports healthy heart and nerve function.
A note from the editors
Mash with a little olive oil or breast milk/formula to create a creamy spread that is easier for baby to handle.
Good to know
Always remove the tough outer skin of the bean, as it can be difficult for babies to chew and may pose a choking risk. Ensure they are cooked until they are soft enough to be easily squished between your thumb and forefinger.
