Miso

Miso, a fermented soybean paste, adds a wonderful savory depth of flavor and offers beneficial probiotics. Introduce it in tiny amounts to broaden your baby's palate to new tastes.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Stir a tiny, pea-sized amount of white or yellow miso into warm vegetable purees, homemade low-sodium broths, or oatmeal. 9-12 months: Incorporate a slightly larger, but still small, amount of miso into sauces, glazes, or soups for flavor, ensuring it's well-diluted. 12+ months: Use miso sparingly in various dishes, like marinades or dressings, always mindful of the sodium content.

Nutrition

Miso contains protein and essential minerals like zinc and copper, which support your baby's overall development. Its fermentation process also introduces beneficial probiotics that contribute to a healthy gut microbiome.

A note from the editors

Opt for white or yellow miso, which are milder and generally less salty than darker varieties. Remember, a very small amount goes a long way in flavoring baby's food.

Good to know

Miso is made from soybeans, which are a common allergen. Introduce it one at a time and watch for reactions. Miso is also high in sodium, so use it very sparingly and in tiny amounts for babies, as they need very little salt.
