Mung Beans

Mung beans are a fantastic, nutrient-packed legume perfect for babies starting solids at 6 months. They have a mild flavor and a soft texture when cooked, making them very easy for little ones to digest.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Cook thoroughly and blend into a smooth porridge or a thick, mashed puree. 9-12 months: Serve as soft, cooked whole beans mixed with soft rice or mashed vegetables. 12+ months: Serve in soups, stews, or as a finger food in soft-cooked curries.

Nutrition

They are a powerhouse of plant-based protein and fiber, which are critical for healthy growth and gut health. Additionally, they provide significant amounts of folate and magnesium to support your baby’s development.

A note from the editors

Soaking mung beans for a few hours before cooking can significantly reduce cooking time and improve their digestibility.

Good to know

Always ensure mung beans are cooked until soft enough to squish between your fingers to prevent choking. Thorough cooking also helps reduce the gas that can sometimes occur with legumes.
