Food guide
Mussels
Mussels are a nutritious seafood that can be introduced to babies from 6 months. When cooked until tender, their soft texture makes them suitable for early eaters, offering a wonderful taste of the ocean.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cooked mussels, finely chopped or pureed, mixed into other soft foods like pureed vegetables or grains. 9-12 months: Cooked, finely chopped or shredded mussels, mixed into pasta, rice, or soft vegetable dishes. 12+ months: Cooked, whole mussels (without shell) offered as a finger food, ensuring they are very tender.
Nutrition
Mussels are packed with iron, vital for healthy blood and brain development, and omega-3 fatty acids, which support cognitive function. They also provide vitamin B12 for energy and high-quality protein for growth and repair.
A note from the editors
Always cook mussels until they are fully open and plump. Discard any mussels that remain closed or have broken shells after cooking.
Good to know
Mussels are a common allergen. Introduce a small amount first and observe for any signs of allergic reaction, such as hives or swelling, before increasing the quantity. Always ensure they are thoroughly cooked to food safety standards.
