Food guide
Mustard Greens
Mustard greens are a nutrient-dense leafy green that can be introduced as early as 6 months. While they have a naturally spicy, peppery bite, cooking them mellows the flavor significantly for delicate palates.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam until very soft and blend into a puree, or stir into mashed potatoes. 9-12 months: Finely chop cooked leaves and stir into grains, omelets, or pasta. 12+ months: Serve as a soft, sautéed side dish or mixed into hearty casseroles.
Nutrition
These greens are an exceptional source of vitamins A, K, and C, which are vital for vision, bone health, and immune function. They also provide a good amount of calcium and iron, supporting your baby's physical development.
A note from the editors
Pair mustard greens with a source of vitamin C, like a squeeze of lemon juice, to help your baby absorb the plant-based iron more effectively.
Good to know
Mustard greens contain nitrates, so ensure they are prepared fresh rather than reheated multiple times. Steam or sauté them well until they are tender and easily mashable.
