Napa Cabbage
Napa cabbage is an excellent, mild vegetable to introduce as early as 6 months. Its delicate leaves are easy for babies to manage and have a naturally sweet flavor that pairs well with many other dishes.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam or sauté finely shredded leaves until very soft, then serve mixed with a bit of breastmilk or baby-safe oil. 9-12 months: Serve sautéed or stewed strips as part of a larger dish, such as a soft grain bowl. 12+ months: Serve as lightly sautéed ribbons or mixed into soups and stir-fries.
Nutrition
This leafy green is packed with vitamin C and vitamin K, which support immune health and bone development. It also contains fiber to support digestive regularity, making it a gentle option for your baby's developing gut.
A note from the editors
To reduce waste, save the tougher stem ends for your own stir-fries while using the softer, greener leaves for baby's meals.
Good to know
Always cook the cabbage thoroughly to soften the fibrous ribs, which can pose a choking risk if left raw or undercooked. Ensure you chop or shred it finely for younger babies to facilitate safe swallowing.
