Food guide
Nutmeg
Nutmeg is a warm, aromatic spice that can be introduced to babies from 6 months, offering a gentle way to expand their palate. Use it sparingly to add a subtle, comforting flavor to both sweet and savory dishes.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: A tiny pinch of freshly grated or ground nutmeg, mixed thoroughly into purees, porridges, or baked goods. 9-12 months: A small pinch, grated into fruit purees, yogurt, or savory dishes like mashed sweet potato. 12+ months: Used sparingly to flavor a variety of meals, from oatmeal to roasted vegetables.
Nutrition
Primarily used for flavor, nutmeg offers trace amounts of minerals like manganese and copper, which contribute to overall metabolic health. It also contains natural compounds with mild anti-inflammatory properties.
A note from the editors
Freshly grated nutmeg offers a more potent and vibrant flavor than pre-ground; start with an even smaller amount when using fresh.
Good to know
While generally safe in very small amounts, large quantities of nutmeg can be toxic. Always use this spice very sparingly when preparing food for babies. There are no common allergen concerns with nutmeg.
