Food guide
Oat Milk
Oat milk can be offered as a drink from 12 months. Before that, breast milk or formula stays the main drink, because oat milk does not provide the complete nutrition a baby needs. From 12 months it is a plant-based option for toddlers, best fortified and unsweetened.
How to serve at this age
12+ months: Offer in small amounts (e.g., 2-4 oz daily) as a drink or incorporated into recipes like smoothies, oatmeal, or sauces. Ensure it's unsweetened and fortified.
Nutrition
Oat milk offers some carbohydrates for energy, and many brands are fortified with calcium and vitamin D, crucial for bone development. It can also contain B vitamins, which support metabolism and overall growth. Always choose unsweetened varieties.
A note from the editors
Use unsweetened, fortified oat milk in cereal or smoothies for a dairy-free boost once your baby is over one year old.
Good to know
Oat milk should never be offered as a primary beverage before 12 months, as it does not provide the complete nutrition of breastmilk or formula. Always choose unsweetened varieties to avoid added sugars.
