Paneer

Paneer, a fresh, unaged cheese popular in Indian cuisine, has a firm yet crumbly texture and mild flavor, perfect for introduction from 6 months. It's an excellent source of protein and calcium for growing babies.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Grated, mashed, or cut into tiny, soft crumbles, mixed into purees or soft cooked vegetables. 9-12 months: Cut into small, thin strips or pea-sized pieces, cooked until soft, or mixed into soft curries. 12+ months: Cubed into small, soft pieces as a finger food, or incorporated into various cooked dishes.

Nutrition

Paneer is rich in high-quality protein, crucial for growth and muscle development. It's also an excellent source of calcium for strong bones and teeth, and provides healthy fats that are important for energy and brain development.

A note from the editors

To make paneer even softer for babies, you can briefly soak it in warm water or cook it into a sauce until tender.

Good to know

Paneer is a dairy product, which is a common allergen. Introduce a small amount first and watch for any signs of allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling, or digestive upset. Always ensure pieces are very small and soft to prevent choking.
