Food guide

Poi

Poi (mashed taro root, traditional Hawaiian food) can be introduced around 6 months. It's been used as a first food for generations.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Serve fresh or slightly fermented poi at desired consistency. 9-12 months: Mix with other foods. 12-24 months: Include as part of varied diet.

Nutrition

Easy to digest. Good source of fiber and potassium. Contains B vitamins and some protein.

A note from the editors

Fresh poi is best. It naturally ferments and becomes more sour over time. Some babies prefer it fresh, others fermented.

Good to know

Naturally fermented poi has probiotics. Very mild flavor. Adjust consistency with water.
