Quail
Quail is a lean, nutrient-dense poultry that can be introduced from 6 months. It's an excellent first meat due to its rich iron content and tender texture when cooked properly.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Finely shredded cooked quail, mixed into purées or offered as a soft, stewed piece for gumming. 9-12 months: Small, tender shredded pieces or very finely minced in dishes. 12+ months: Small, bite-sized pieces of cooked quail, ensuring it's always tender.
Nutrition
It's an outstanding source of iron, crucial for preventing anemia and supporting cognitive development in growing babies. Quail also provides high-quality protein for muscle growth and B vitamins for energy and nerve function.
A note from the editors
Cook quail until exceptionally tender by stewing or slow-cooking, then shred it finely for easy consumption and to minimize choking risk.
Good to know
Always ensure quail is thoroughly cooked to a safe internal temperature to eliminate harmful bacteria. Be vigilant for any tiny bones if serving pieces that aren't completely deboned or puréed.
