Red Rice
Red rice is a whole grain rice variety with a distinctive reddish-brown color and nutty flavor. It can be introduced from around 6 months. Popular in Asian cuisine, red rice offers more fiber and nutrients than white rice while still being gentle enough for babies when cooked properly.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Grind dry red rice into a fine powder, then cook with water or broth into a smooth porridge. Alternatively, cook red rice until very soft and blend into a puree. 9-12 months: Cook until very soft and serve as congee, mixed with vegetables or fish. Can also mix half red rice with half white rice for a gentler texture. 12+ months: Serve soft-cooked red rice as part of a regular meal, paired with proteins and vegetables.
Nutrition
Higher in fiber, iron, and zinc compared to white rice. Contains anthocyanins (antioxidants that give it the red color), B vitamins, and magnesium. The additional fiber supports healthy digestion.
A note from the editors
Soaking red rice for a few hours before cooking reduces cooking time and results in a softer texture. Start by mixing a small amount of red rice with white rice and gradually increase the ratio as your baby gets used to the texture.
Good to know
Red rice is not a common allergen. It takes longer to cook than white rice and has a chewier texture, so it must be cooked until very soft or ground into powder for younger babies. Mixing with white rice can help achieve a softer consistency.
