Rye

Rye, a nutritious whole grain, can be introduced from 6 months, typically in cooked forms like bread or cereal. It offers a robust flavor and good fiber content.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Finely ground rye flour cooked into a thin porridge, or soft rye bread crusts for gnawing (if very soft). 9-12 months: Small, thin strips of soft rye bread (toasted or untoasted), or mixed into other cereals. 12+ months: Small pieces of soft rye bread, rye pasta, or cooked rye berries, ensuring they are well-cooked and soft.

Nutrition

It is an excellent source of dietary fiber, crucial for promoting healthy digestion and preventing constipation. Rye also provides B vitamins, important for energy metabolism and proper nerve function.

A note from the editors

When introducing rye bread, opt for low-sodium varieties and ensure it's very soft, potentially offering just the crust for gnawing if appropriate.

Good to know

Rye contains gluten, which is a common allergen. Introduce rye products one at a time and carefully monitor your baby for any signs of an allergic reaction.
