Sardines

Sardines can be introduced around 6 months. They're small fish packed with nutrients and the soft bones provide calcium.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Mash sardines including soft bones. 9-12 months: Offer flaked pieces. 12-24 months: Serve on toast or in various dishes.

Nutrition

Excellent source of omega-3s, calcium (from bones), protein, and vitamin D. Low in mercury. Contains B12.

A note from the editors

Sardines packed in olive oil have more omega-3s. Rinse to reduce sodium if desired.

Good to know

Fish is a common allergen. Bones are soft and edible. Choose low-sodium varieties packed in water or olive oil.
