Food guide
Seitan
Seitan, or 'wheat meat', is a high-protein option made from gluten, suitable for babies once they have been introduced to gluten safely. It provides a chewy texture that is great for babies to gnaw on while exploring textures.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Finely ground or mashed into a soft, textured puree. 9-12 months: Finely chopped or shredded into small pieces. 12+ months: Serve in thin strips or bite-sized cubes.
Nutrition
Seitan is an incredible plant-based source of protein, essential for growth and muscle development. It contains iron and selenium, which contribute to healthy blood and cell function. Because it is highly processed, it is best paired with varied whole foods.
A note from the editors
Steam seitan before serving to soften the texture significantly, making it much easier for babies to safely chew.
Good to know
Seitan contains wheat and is a common allergen, so monitor for reactions if your baby has a known sensitivity. Ensure it is cooked until tender and chopped appropriately to manage its dense, chewy texture.
