Sour Cream

Sour cream, a fermented dairy product, can be introduced from 6 months as a small addition to foods, offering a creamy texture and tangy flavor. It can add a delightful richness to your baby's meals and is a good way to introduce dairy. Remember to introduce common allergens one at a time and watch for reactions.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Swirl a tiny dollop of plain, full-fat sour cream into pureed vegetables, fruits, or cereals to add creaminess and flavor. 9-12 months: Offer small amounts mixed into mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or as a dip for soft-cooked vegetables. Ensure it's plain and full-fat. 12+ months: Sour cream can be used in moderation as a condiment or ingredient in family meals, always choosing plain and full-fat varieties without added salt.

Nutrition

Sour cream provides calcium, essential for developing strong bones and teeth. It also offers some fat, important for brain development and energy in growing babies. If it's a cultured sour cream, it may contain beneficial probiotics for gut health.

A note from the editors

Mix a spoonful of plain, full-fat sour cream into mashed avocado or a fruit puree for added creaminess and a hint of tang.

Good to know

Sour cream is a dairy product and a common allergen. Introduce it in small amounts, on its own, and monitor closely for any signs of an allergic reaction. Always choose plain, full-fat sour cream with no added salt or sugars. Babies need very little sodium.
