Food guide
Soybeans
Soybeans are a versatile legume that can be introduced to babies around 6 months, offering a nutrient-dense option as they begin solids. They are an excellent source of plant-based protein and fiber, making them suitable for growing infants.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Served as a smooth puree or thoroughly mashed. For baby-led weaning, offer very soft, mashed soybeans or thin strips of soft tofu. 9-12 months: Soft, cooked, mashed soybeans can be offered. Small, soft pieces of plain tofu are also appropriate. 12+ months: Small, soft pieces of cooked soybeans or plain tofu, thoroughly cooked and diced.
Nutrition
Soybeans provide vital plant-based protein essential for growth and development, along with significant amounts of iron to support healthy blood and cognitive function. They are also rich in fiber, aiding digestion, and calcium for strong bones.
A note from the editors
Pair soybeans or tofu with foods rich in Vitamin C, like bell peppers or tomatoes, to enhance iron absorption.
Good to know
Soy is a common allergen, so introduce it alone and in small amounts, watching for any allergic reactions. Whole soybeans pose a choking risk and must be prepared appropriately.
