Split Peas
Split peas are a nutrient-dense powerhouse that can be introduced as soon as your baby starts solids. They cook down into a soft, creamy consistency, making them an ideal first legume.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cook until very soft and mash into a thick puree or serve as a soft dahl. 9-12 months: Serve as a thicker pea mash, allowing your baby to scoop it with their hands or a pre-loaded spoon. 12+ months: Serve as a thick soup or mixed with soft cooked grains like quinoa.
Nutrition
These tiny legumes are fiber-rich, promoting excellent gut health and preventing constipation in babies. They also offer a significant amount of plant-based protein and iron, which are crucial for physical development. Their high folate content supports the healthy creation of new cells.
A note from the editors
Cook split peas with a little turmeric or cumin to add anti-inflammatory benefits and a pleasant, savory aroma.
Good to know
Ensure the peas are cooked until completely mushy to avoid any risk of aspiration. There is no major allergen risk, but introduce them in small portions initially to monitor how your baby's digestion adjusts to the high fiber content.
