Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds can be introduced around 6 months, providing a boost of healthy fats and micronutrients for your baby's development. Due to their hard texture, they must always be served in a safe, processed form.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Finely ground into a powder and sprinkled onto purees or mixed into soft foods. Smooth sunflower seed butter can be thinly spread on toast fingers or soft fruit. 9-12 months: Continue with finely ground powder or smooth sunflower seed butter, thinned if necessary, mixed into oatmeal or yogurt. 12+ months: Finely ground seeds mixed into meals or smooth sunflower seed butter, spread thinly.
Nutrition
These seeds are packed with healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats crucial for brain development and energy. They also provide Vitamin E, an antioxidant supporting immune health, and magnesium, vital for nerve and muscle function.
A note from the editors
Mix a small amount of smooth sunflower seed butter into unsweetened yogurt or oatmeal for added creaminess and nutrients.
Good to know
Sunflower seeds are a common allergen; introduce them carefully, watching for any reactions. Whole seeds are a significant choking hazard for babies and young children.
