Food guide
Taro
Taro is a starchy root vegetable that is a staple in many cultures and can be introduced at 6 months. It has a mild, nutty flavor and a firm texture that becomes smooth when properly cooked.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam or boil thoroughly until very soft and mash well with breast milk or water. 9-12 months: Offer soft, cooked chunks that are easy for baby to grasp or mash slightly. 12+ months: Serve as bite-sized soft cubes or roasted wedges that are easy to pick up.
Nutrition
Taro is a good source of complex carbohydrates, providing sustained energy for your baby's busy days of learning and playing. It also contains potassium, which is important for heart and muscle health. The presence of fiber supports a healthy digestive tract.
A note from the editors
Mash taro with a splash of coconut milk for a tropical flavor profile that pairs beautifully with chicken or fish.
Good to know
Never serve raw taro, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause irritation and itching in the mouth and throat. Always ensure it is cooked until it is fork-tender to eliminate these irritants and ensure it is safe to swallow.
