Food guide
Tempeh
Tempeh is a fantastic plant-based protein source made from fermented soybeans, perfect for babies ready for solid foods. Its firm, nutty texture is excellent for developing the pincer grasp and oral-motor skills.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam strips and offer as finger food or crumble into mashed avocado. 9-12 months: Serve bite-sized cubes that are easy to pick up. 12+ months: Serve sliced into strips or cubes as part of a balanced meal.
Nutrition
As a fermented food, tempeh provides probiotics that support a healthy developing gut microbiome. It is rich in high-quality protein and iron, both essential for your baby's rapid growth and cognitive development. It also offers a dose of calcium for strong bone formation.
A note from the editors
Steam your tempeh for 10 minutes before pan-searing to ensure it is tender enough for your baby's gums.
Good to know
Tempeh contains soy, which is a common allergen; monitor for reactions upon initial exposure. Always cook tempeh thoroughly by steaming or baking before serving to ensure it is soft and safe to digest.
