Food guide
Veal
Veal, a tender red meat, is an excellent first meat to introduce to babies from 6 months, providing essential nutrients for their rapid growth. It's a fantastic source of highly absorbable iron.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Pureed or finely minced and mixed into purees, or served as very soft, shredded pieces for baby-led weaning, ensuring it's easily mashable. 9-12 months: Small, very tender pieces of slow-cooked or ground veal, mixed into stews or pasta sauces. 12+ months: Small, chewable pieces of well-cooked veal in stews, casseroles, or as part of a meal.
Nutrition
Veal is an excellent source of highly absorbable iron, crucial for preventing anemia and supporting cognitive development in babies. It also provides essential protein for muscle growth and zinc, which is vital for immune system function.
A note from the editors
Slow-cook veal until it's incredibly tender and easily shreddable or mashable, making it safe and easy for babies to consume.
Good to know
Always ensure veal is thoroughly cooked to an appropriate internal temperature to eliminate any harmful bacteria. Offer with vitamin C rich foods for optimal iron absorption.
