Wheat Flour
Wheat flour can be introduced from 6 months once your baby is ready for solids, typically in baked goods or as a thickener. It's a foundational ingredient for many family meals.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Offer in well-cooked, soft forms like pancakes, muffins, or as a thickener in purees or sauces. Ensure texture is easily mashable. 9-12 months: Continue with soft baked goods, pasta, or incorporate into soft dishes like meatballs or casseroles. 12+ months: Enjoy in a variety of family meals, ensuring portions are appropriate and textures are manageable for chewing.
Nutrition
Provides carbohydrates for energy. Whole wheat flour offers more fiber, B vitamins, and iron compared to refined white flour, supporting healthy growth and digestion.
A note from the editors
Choose whole wheat flour for added nutrients and fiber, and use it to make homemade baby-friendly versions of pancakes or muffins without added sugar or salt.
Good to know
Wheat is a common allergen. When introducing, ensure any baked goods or dishes containing wheat flour are made without honey (if under 12 months), added sugar, or excessive salt. Watch for reactions.
