Yam
True yams can be introduced around 6 months when cooked until soft. They're starchier and drier than sweet potatoes.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Steam or boil until soft and mash or puree. 9-12 months: Offer soft pieces. 12-24 months: Include in various dishes.
Nutrition
Good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamin C. Contains manganese and B vitamins. Lower in sugar than sweet potatoes.
A note from the editors
True yams have white or purple flesh. What's labeled 'yam' in US stores is usually sweet potato.
Good to know
True yams have rough, bark-like skin. Cook until completely soft. Often confused with orange sweet potatoes.
