Food guide
Basil
Fresh basil can be introduced around 6 months as a flavoring herb. It adds wonderful aroma and taste to baby food without adding salt.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Add finely minced fresh basil to purees, especially tomato-based dishes. 9-12 months: Mix into pasta sauces or vegetable dishes. 12-24 months: Use in pesto (without nuts for younger babies) or fresh on pasta.
Nutrition
Contains vitamin K, vitamin A, and antioxidants. Has anti-inflammatory properties. Very low in calories.
A note from the editors
Add basil at the end of cooking to preserve flavor and nutrients. Fresh basil can be frozen in olive oil in ice cube trays.
Good to know
Use fresh basil finely chopped or pureed. Dried basil is also safe but has less flavor. Start with small amounts.
