Food guide
Honey
Honey must NOT be given to babies under 12 months due to risk of infant botulism. After 12 months, it can be used as a natural sweetener.
How to serve at this age
12-24 months: Use small amounts as a sweetener in foods or drinks.
Nutrition
Contains antioxidants and trace enzymes. Natural sweetener with antimicrobial properties. High in sugar.
A note from the editors
Raw honey has more beneficial compounds but same botulism risk. Pasteurized honey is equally unsafe under age 1.
Good to know
NEVER give honey to babies under 1 year - risk of botulism is serious. After 12 months, use sparingly as it's still sugar.
