Polenta

Polenta, made from cornmeal, can be introduced around 6 months. Its smooth, creamy texture makes it an excellent first grain for babies.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Serve soft polenta mixed with vegetable purees. 9-12 months: Cool polenta, cut into strips for finger food. 12-24 months: Serve with meat sauces or vegetables.

Nutrition

Provides carbohydrates for energy, is naturally gluten-free, and contains fiber, iron, and B vitamins.

A note from the editors

Make polenta ahead and refrigerate - it firms up and can be sliced into easy finger food shapes.

Good to know

Polenta is generally well-tolerated. Avoid instant polenta with added salt. Cook until smooth with no grainy texture.
